Vanishing Point

VANISHING POINT is an ongoing series of paintings that explore how a culture haunted by unrealized futures and the erosion of lived experience turns the self into a ghost. Drawing on personal and collective cultural memory, the paintings depict narratively ambiguous moments that appear out of sync with chronological time. Figures turn away from the viewer—faceless, dejected, and anonymous—positioning the viewer as an onlooker whose distance mirrors the ghostly condition of the figures themselves. The spaces they inhabit appear destabilized, collapsing through repeated allusions to the flatness of the painted surface. By utilizing visual languages of disintegration, stagnation, and ghostliness, the work emphasizes the somatic qualities of paint—its ability to stain, remain transparent or opaque, and retain visible traces of the artist’s labor—situating painting as a medium from which experience cannot be detached or simulated. Through this insistence on materiality, VANISHING POINT renders the loss of experience as a moment made physical, depicting a sociocultural malaise that is felt on a personal and collective level while also establishing presence within it.
